Ryukyu Kempo
Ryukyu Kempo is a Classical form of karate - a style of self-defense that was reserved for only select students and existed prior to the modifications many systems underwent in the mid-1900's. Ryukyu Kempo is a combination of Kyusho-Jitsu (the art of striking pressure points) and Tuite-Jitsu (the use of pressure points in grappling). In Ryukyu Kempo, pressure points are utilized to cause pain, immobilize an opponent, or render and opponent unconscious.
In many traditional styles, the true self-defense techniques hidden in kata have been preserved. They are just not openly taught. By the very nature of kata, students can be practicing the same moves side-by-side, but only a select few may be told the true self-defense applications. Thanks to the efforts of George Dillman and Taika Oyata there has been a resurgence of Classical Martial Arts. Today, there is no reason for modern karateka to be satisfied with practicing kata for balance, coordination, meditation, or exercise alone. While these are still valuable benefits to kata practice, the true value of kata lies in the self-defense techniques contained therein.
